When building a smart home, do you need fiber optics?

Basically, to build smart Home smart home system we don't even need internet access to manage local automation. Smart devices connect to FRITZ router! using DECT technology, and if the user does not care about the option of remote control of devices when not at home, you can stop there. Nevertheless, the ability to turn the heating or lighting on or off or to monitor the parameters of individual appliances from outside the home is an extremely useful feature. This requires an Internet connection with a public IP address, and here fiber has the most advantages in terms of connection speed and stability.

Smart home

So if we really want to have a smart home, rather than an island, cut off from the world, fiber optic Internet, to connect our dwelling to the global network, will be the best option. This is the scenario we will assume for further consideration.

The constituent smart home devices most easily (and extensively) configured through the web user interface. Having access to the Internet and having enabled the appropriate function that allows remote access to the configurator, we can fully manage settings.

It is worthwhile on this occasion to set your own port, different from the standard one, on which our router will be available (here, for example: 12345). In doing so, it should be noted that some ports are standard and customarily assigned to certain applications. A list of the most important "reserved" ports can be found, for example, on Wikipedia.

Once we have everything configured, for ad hoc control of individual devices smart home the easiest and most convenient way to use the free MyFRITZ app!App (for Android and iOS) and FRITZ!Smart Home.

The app works locally, of course, when our phone or tablet on which it is running is connected to local Wi-Fi. However, nothing prevents you from controlling your home automation in the same way, unlimited by distance, from your travels.

Interestingly, the app creates a secure VPN connection to the FRITZ router in the mobile device environment!, which operates our "smart building" and thus provides support for all functions completely as if we were connected locally to the home network.

In addition, everything is done automatically and invisibly to the user (i.e. whether managed remotely or locally, the user does not need to perform any additional administrative actions) - he simply turns on the application and controls the devices as if nothing ever happened.

Smart Home

Smart home functions as seen by AVM, implemented by the FRITZ family of devices!, has a number of undoubted advantages over systems composed of equipment from different manufacturers and using different technologies. However, it should be noted here that the AVM system is not airtight, i.e. other brands of devices can be integrated with it, as long as they are compatible with the DECT technology used by the German company.

Major advantages include:

• DECT wireless technology as a communication medium, eliminating special smart home-capable wiring. More devices can be added as needed, without investing in infrastructure. In addition, DECT is characterized by greater range, energy savings (DECT ULE) and use of less congested frequencies (unlike Wi-Fi-based Smart Home devices).
• Integration of the entire system in a single device, facilitating centralized management in a single interface and/or application.
• Organic, natural and seamless connection of the system to the Internet, giving the possibility of remote management.
